Complete Guide to Importing Vehicles in Pakistan
Eligible schemes, age limits, required documents, and the customs clearance process for importing a vehicle into Pakistan.
Importing a vehicle to Pakistan is a popular option for overseas Pakistanis and car enthusiasts who want models, features, or quality not easily available locally. The process involves legal procedures, customs duties, and documentation — understanding the requirements upfront avoids delays, penalties, and unnecessary expense.
Who Can Import a Vehicle to Pakistan?
The Government of Pakistan allows vehicle imports under three main schemes:
- Personal Baggage Scheme — overseas Pakistanis who have stayed abroad for at least 700 days in the last three years can bring a vehicle when returning to Pakistan.
- Transfer of Residence Scheme — for Pakistani citizens who have lived abroad continuously for a significant period and plan to settle back in Pakistan.
- Gift Scheme — an overseas Pakistani can gift a vehicle to close family members (parents, spouse, children, or siblings).
Each scheme has its own eligibility conditions, so confirm your status before starting the process.
Age Limit for Imported Vehicles
- • Cars must not be older than 3 years
- • SUVs and 4×4 vehicles must not be older than 5 years
- • Motorcycles must not be older than 3 years
Age is calculated from the vehicle's manufacturing date to the shipment date.
Documents Typically Required
- • Valid passport copy
- • CNIC or NICOP
- • Original purchase invoice
- • Bill of lading
- • Vehicle registration documents from the country of export
- • Proof of stay abroad (if applicable)
Customs Duties and Taxes
Several taxes and duties apply when importing a vehicle — customs duty, sales tax, income tax, regulatory duty, and additional customs duty. The total depends on the vehicle's engine capacity, model year, and assessed value, and these rates change with government policy. We don't publish specific duty rates here since they can change — confirm current rates directly with FBR or ask us for an estimate based on your specific vehicle.
Shipping Methods
Container shipping places the vehicle inside a container for added safety — the safest and most recommended method. Ro-Ro shipping (Roll-on/Roll-off) drives the vehicle onto a special vessel — more economical but with less protection than container shipping.
Customs Clearance Process
Once the vehicle reaches Karachi Port or Port Qasim, customs authorities inspect it and verify documents. After duties and taxes are paid, the vehicle is released, and the final step is registration with the local Excise and Taxation Department.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
